Katherine Emel, 29, of Plymouth Meeting, is charged with second-degree murder, robbery, and conspiracy, prosecutors said.
Carter was visiting the mother of his child on Powell Street when he went outside to grab money from his Buick LeSabre, investigators said in the criminal complaint. The 35-year-old had recently won $3,000 from sports betting, authorities wrote.
On his way back to the Powell Street home, Carter was robbed at gunpoint then fatally shot in the head by three men who jumped out of a Toyota Rav-4, police have said. The Toyota, which had been reported stolen out of Cheltenham in December, was found abandoned and on fire early the next morning.
Damon Brantley Jr., Daquan Allen, and Jerry Butler have each been charged with the killing. Brantley the accused shooter, Allen the suspected getaway driver, and Butler an alleged accomplice were all arrested by US Marshals near Binghamton, New York on Jan. 31.
Detectives said the Buick Carter was driving belonged to his girlfriend Emel. She had previously placed a GPS tracking device in the car, according to investigators, and police believe she gave suspect Allen her boyfriend's location on the night of his murder.
Cell phone records show Emel had communicated with Allen multiple times before the killing and told him about Carter's gambling winnings, prosecutors say. She's also accused of meeting up with Allen after the murder and taking $700 of the money he allegedly stole from her boyfriend.
“When you assist other people in committing a dangerous felony like robbery and the target of the robbery is murdered, then under the law, you are responsible for their murder as well,” said DA Kevin Steele.
“In this case, this defendant is charged with Second-Degree Murder, which is a homicide that occurs during the commission of a felony.”
Emel surrendered to police on Feb. 7 and was denied bail due to the nature of the charges, court records show. She has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Feb. 16.
